Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros’ Big Top festival last weekend was not just about great music, but an forum to express creativity through art. For Girl Trip, it was an opportunity to encourage young girls to celebrate their individuality and develop their unique voices.
Created in 2012, Girl Trip’s mission is to teach girls ages 13-16 to value yourself, be creative and follow your dreams.
“Girl Trip empowers girls to value themselves through their creativity and their contributions,” said Harrison James of Girl Trip. “And 10% of our profits go to Girl Rising to help girls get educated in countries like Africa and Pakistan, where they don’t have books. We also teach creativity workshops to do your true work in the world, whether you’re a musician or a writer. It’s about leadership, getting unblocked and undistractable.”
Inside its Big Top booth, Girl Trip sold journals, tote bags and T-shirts that featured various characters. In all, there are eight different characters, including Popular Girl and Goth Girl.
“Each T-shirt represents a different aspect of femininity and empowerment,” James said.
